Synopsis | Rapid diagnostic tests have been defined as any test that yields a result in the same clinic visit as diagnosis or which can be used in healthcare settings with little infrastructure or trained personnel. For rapid diagnosis of bacterial meningitis, immunochromatography or latex agglutination tests have been the techniques most commonly used. With concept of syndromic diagnosis, multiplex PCR (BioFire film array testing) has become a useful aid for the rapid detection of bacteria (E.coli, Neisseria, H. influenzae, S. pneumoniae, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Listeria), viruses (Herpes simplex, Cytomegalovirus, Enterovirus, Varicella zoster) and Cryptococcus. CSF adenosine deaminase (ADA), Mycobacterium tuberculosis PCR and nucleic acid amplification (NAA) tests help in the diagnosis of tubercular meningitis. With significantly increased diagnostic yield and shortened time to diagnosis, film array testing has direct impact on morbidity, mortality, length of stay and antibiotic consumption. | |
