The importance of muscle in perioperative cognitive dysfunction was examined by testing a sarcopenia model and showing that preoperative sarcopenia exacerbates postoperative cognitive decline and is caused by decreased neurogenesis and BDNF in the hippocampus. He is also studying the effectiveness of exercise in preventing postoperative cognitive decline due to muscle loss.
